Day 8 - Mao Kong Gondola and Taipei Zoo

This might be the last and final post for my Taiwan Trip

Though I had another day, but it is just walking around XiMenDing, then to the air port

Nothing Spectacular

So on the Eighth rainy day, we went to Mao Kong Gondola aka Cable car and Taipei Zoo!

There were 3 stops in total, and honestly the misty conditions makes sight seeing.. unbearable

We stopped by a log house for some tea

Nothing much to see at the top, hence we went to the Zoo!

NT$60 is around SGD2.50

Super cheap compared to our Zoo

Well, the weather was still rainy,

most of the animals were sleeping..

and we didn't really see much..

"Death is what keeps people alive", I told Angie.

To commemorate on my life of 27 years,

I thought of touching on a taboo topic of life and death

Rather controversial to talk about it on one's birthday

And even more controversial to go a cemetery on that day.

Kranji War Memorial

Place where brave souls laid to rest

Sanctuary where life were honourably lived and remembered.

Most people in current society subscribed to the notion of chasing egocentric idealism

Accumulating wealth, success and progress

in a bid

to achieve happiness.

But the above sentence is not really a mathematical formula,

where Wealth + Success + Progress = Happiness

Happiness is a state of mind

And Ultimately,

A Choice

Life and Death

The space between Life and Death seems further apart

Thanks to technological advances in medicine and also higher quality of basic human needs

At the same time,

the void of empathic emotions also widens

Take a Break

I like self reflections,

constantly reminding where I am along this life journey

and what other steps I need to take to fufill my dreams of exploration

Tranquil

Angie asked me why death is what keeps us alive,

I explained that it is the realisation that we, one day, will leave this earth

and our existence is a mere transient one,

But its also due to this very simple fact,

that we live ourself to the fullest

making the existence a worthwhile one.

Day 7 - Jiu Fen Tea Time and Kee Lung Dinner

We stopped by for some tea in a hundred year old teahouse.

The interior decor brings you back to those old days of Marital arts era

so the both of us enjoyed a cup of tea

where time stood still in its flow

After quite a while, we continued to explore Jiu fen

and found this in front of a shop

We couldn't really make out what it is..

hence we went into the shop..

Well the shop was selling fishballs fit for giants

makes perfect for them to have a gigantic chihuahua

Day 7 - Taipei 101 and Jiu Fen

After having some rather unconventional breakfast,

we make a quick trip to see the Taipei 101,

but we did not bother to go up though

Honestly,

it looked like stacks of supermarket baskets from far to me

After that, we took a bus to Jiu Fen,

But the gloomy weather did spoil the day, and worsen my illness

A hot bowl of beef noodle to warm up our bodies

Day 6 - Ping Xi, Jing Tong, Shi Fen

Continuing our trip in Ping Xi,

We decided to put the sky lantern in broad daylight,

cause we don't have the luxury of time to stay till night

Anyway Ivy's sky lantern went up and dropped down in the mountains nearby

Mine went all the way up and disappeared

And I was telling her that mine reached the heavens and hers didn't

We took the train and travel to Jing Tong next.

The train runs through the livelihood of its residents

Due to time constraints, we hurried to the waterfall which was quite a distance away

We scurried for 45 mins, saw the waterfall for 15 mins..

And then zoomed straight back to the town

Day 6 - Ping Xi Old Town

Something idiotic happened after we return from Dan Shui,

We tried buying train tickets to Ping Xi, our destination next day.

So happily, we tap tap tap on the machine, selecting round tickets,

pump in the money and out comes the tickets.

Feeling smug about conquering the train ticketing machine,

we took the MRT back to our homestay.

We then took at our tickets and found out,

that the tickets dispensed were only for the return trip

-_-'

the tickets to PingXi were marked with XXX

Why didn't the ticketing machine inform us that the tickets to PingXi were out

and why bother to dispense useless tickets...

We even went back to Taipei Main station to just to confirm that the tickets are sold out

=_='

Nonetheless, its not gonna stop us from going PingXi

The next day morning, we took the MRT to Muzha

To get on the bus to Ping Xi

Once alighting at Muzha, we were looking for breakfast

And we selected this shabby looking shack

That was providing breakfast to workers from the construction site nearby

Day 5 - Yang Ming Shan

Yes.. We are finally at Day 5, halfway through the trip!

After a quick fix of a breakfast, we took the bus over to Yang Ming Shan

Having alighted at the bus depot..

We thought we should drop by the visitor centre..

(the signs at the bus depot make the visitor centre deceivingly near..-_-')

We have to trek through a good 500-700m of this terrain to reach the visitor centre

only to find....

That visitor centre is closed on every first Monday of the month..

Super unlucky..

Hence we waited in the semi-rural wilderness for the Feeder Bus to bring us to..

After alighting.. seems like a long stroll again..

The view is really exhilarating..

Especially the flora and fauna

After reaching Taipei, we went back to our homestay

Unfortunately he fell ill and was hospitalised

Hence we changed plans to go to Shi Lin Night Market

Day 3 - Coastal Scenic Route (Part 2)

Still at Shi Ti Ping, Mr Chen decided to venture out a bit more...

There's Ivy at the top, its rather high up and she's afraid of heights

After climbing down.. we saw this..

Nature's Aquarium..

This part intrigued me the most.

Over long period of time, pockets appeared in the coast rock formation

This pockets gather water either from rain or the sea,

and slowly life developed in them

Its really nature's aquarium, there were fishes, crabs and all.

Mr Chen first asked me what is this,

I told him that I have no idea except that its NOT a pineapple for sure

(cause pineapples don't grow on trees, neither do they look like that)

then Mr Chen explained that some singaporeans thought its pineapple.

*Facepalm*

We woke up at the break of dawn, and I was feeling much much better,

thanks to the medicine and care from Ivy.

After breakfast at the homestay,

We headed out to the coastal scenic route,

1st stop was a sea of flowers by the road..

Well. not really like a sea,

more like the grass was dotted all over with different colours

I think it will be more fantastic in the later months where the rest are in full bloom

New Singaporean friends made,

Han Sui and Judy,

joined us on our coastal route

Mr Chen brought us to a little river to pick jade,

Due to the rainy weather previously,

the jade was more prominent,

we kept asking Mr Chen to check if its a jade or a rock..

"这个是不是?" resounded through this event

We had the Hakka 杂菜面.

Next, we went to the wood carving exhibition of the tribal people,

as well as the first train in Hua Lian

Day 2 - 7 Star Lake and Stone House!

After leaving the Gorge, I started to feel rather sick,

my throat was aching and my temperature went up.

I was running a fever... -_-

Think its due to the accumulated stress cum heatiness from the exam period

Nonetheless we proceeded to our next checkpoint

But due to my now HIGH fever, I was immobile and poor Ivy had to eat packed dinner

Fried Pork Rib Soup that was pretty delicious and surprisingly not oily.

Auntie Liu, the owner of the Stone house was kind enough to provide me medication

and also offered to bring me to a doc,

but I rejected, knowing I'll heal fast enough.

Ivy also took very good care of me,

Anyway, on the cab while on the way back to the homestay,

Mr Chen also gave me some medicine.

Its some weird chinese liquid and he himself took out a bottle to cheers with me..

Tasted awfully dubious and I just downed it w/o a second thought

Day 2 - Hualian, Taroko Gorge, Part 4

Yes yes.. we are still at Day 2, Taroko Gorge

Now we are near the Swallow's Cave

And what you see over here is a rock formation that looks like a frog

Legend has it that Taiwan,

despite being plagued by typhoons,

they are protected by floods due to this rock frog

Just that there is a nearby temple for Yue Fei,

Ivy have a fear of heights hence she was clinching on to me real tight

Upon reaching this destination, our cab driver, Mr Chen,

handed us 2 sheets of tissue paper,

gave us specific instructions to a certain part of the tunnel

to release the tissue paper in the air

and see it drift up into the sky

We were also required to wear helmet for our safety,

so once we reached that SPECIFIC place,

we released the paper for 6 times...

and for that 6 times....

it flew right in... -_-'

and there we were behaving suspiciously,

afraid that people would see our littering act.

We saw this long flight of stairs and started to ascend the stairs

due to the strong curiosity of ours

so we climbed this ridiculously long flight of stairs,

we saw posters of some herbal drink being sold upstairs

Once at the top, we were damn thirsty and had to get a cold drink

to cool us a lil.. and we decided to get those herbal drink...

1 500ml bottle cost 100 TWD and we bought 2...

that's around 8 SGD for 2 bottles of cheap herbal tea...

Day 2 - Taipei to Hualian, Taroko Gorge, Part 1

After waking up in our home stay in Zhongxiao Fuxing, we headed over to Taipei Main Station for a quick fix of breakfast and coffee from 7-11.

FYI, Daybreak is at 5 plus and breakfast opens pretty late..

We met up with our driver, Mr Chen

And he treated us to a local delight.

Mr Chen explained shops with 3 coloured lightings are those scandily clad woman

while single lighting means for those normal shops

Basically Day 1 was rather uneventful,

Reason being,

Our flight is in the afternoon and when we reached,

It was already 7 plus,

Hence,

Not much you can do less for dinner.

After visiting Lynn and Lucan,
I headed down to a long awaited mini 6km hike,
HSBC Tree Top Walk.
I first saw the Walk in construction back in 2003/4,
while I was doing a navigation exercise in OCS.
I told myself, "That's some cool shit, I'll surely come once its up"
and 5-6 years later, here I am.
